Community Support

Friends of the Shelter only exists thanks to the support of the community spirit of dog lovers in and around Franklin County. As a small, all-volunteer organization, we are often limited to the number of fundraisers we can successfully coordinate each year, but frequently find support from community organizations and local dog lovers who wish to help the dogs of the Franklin County Dog Shelter through events of their own.

Jennifer Brown - Columbus athlete Jennifer Brown is working hard to raise $2,000 for Friends of the Shelter as she trains for Ironman Kentucky in August. In June, she hosted Mozaik for Mutts at Moziak Lounge. She decided to support our cause after she fell in love with a very sick shelter pup who is now her biggest fan. Learn more about Jennifer on her website.

St. Matthew School - Second-grade dog lovers at St. Matthew School in Gahanna got two good deeds for the price of one. Students brought in aluminum cans throughout the year to be recycled. Then, they donated the $500 they earned from the cans to Friends of the Shelter. A big thanks to Andrea Hayson and Erica Murphy for teaching their students how to love the earth -- and the animals on it.

Miles for Mutts - Jonathan and Carla successfully completed the Chicago marathon to raise money for Friends of the Shelter, in spite of record high temperatures.  The support of their friends and family who donated to their cause helped carry them through the race!  We met their fundraising goal and raised $375!  They raised some additional funds offline as well. They drove all the way to Chicago with their "Miles for Mutts" slogan in the car window (pics below).

Neighborhood Chili Cook Off - A local neighborhood raised money for Friends of the Shelter with a neighborhood chili cook off. Shown here are some chili contestants getting ready for the tasting.

Emily & Lindsay - These two enterprising young ladies dropped off a donation of $100 in cash which they earned by offering a pooper scooper service in their neighborhood this summer. Emily's family adopted their dog from Franklin County Dog Shelter earlier this year.

Birthday Donation - Sweet Audrey Jenkins celebrated her birthday and asked for donations for the shelter dogs instead of gifts at her party. Audrey, with her mom and brother, brought an SUV full of stuff to the Franklin County Dog Shelter including food, treats, toys, blankets, newspapers, shampoo and checks totaling $80.

Happy Birthday Audrey and thank you from the dogs at the shelter!

Thank you to Bill and Vanietta Decker who recently celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversay. Mr. and Mrs. Decker asked that guests of their celebration who wished to bring a gift, instead make a donation to Friends of the Shelter and the dogs of the Franklin County Dog Shelter. Over $700 was donated to our shelter dogs from the friends and family of the Decker's.

Make a Difference Day with JP Morgan Chase - Cindy Plymale and her co-workers at JPMorganChase organized a donation drive for Make a Difference Day. Pictured below: Catherine Bourke, Randy Graham, Cindy Plymale & Cliff Gerber delivered food, toys, bedding, newspapers and more to the shelter.

Lemonade for Sale - Macauley (13), Andrew (10) & Johnny (15) Mikes donated birthday money and organized a lemonade stand to benefit the Shelter. They are the proud owners of former Franklin Co Animal Shelter dogs, Bonney & Bunker.
